SCENIC KAYAKING

Take advantage of the mild autumn weather by getting out on the water while it’s still warm. Take in the stunning foliage as you paddle peacefully down Swatara Creek, a local jewel just two miles from the Inn. This scenic waterway is also home to an abundance of birds (over 40 species have been documented). Be open to wildlife sightings and bird watching; they are a fun and unique way to experience the local scenery. The gorgeous “Swattie” has no white water and is easy to navigate. We highly recommend Cocoa Kayaks as the best place to rent your vessel. They can arrange both pickup and drop-off for you. If you’d like a guide, Cocoa Kayaks’ guides are top-notch!

BIKING IN THE CRISP AIR

Exploring on two wheels is also a fun way to see the foliage and enjoy the crisp autumn air. Conewago Lebanon Valley Rail Trail is perfect for a nice bike ride (or a long walk). The trail is only a short ride from the Inn, and the entire trail totals 20 miles, all with delightful rural scenery. We have secure, covered storage for your use if you bring your own bike. If you’d rather rent, Hershey Cycles has plenty of rentals right in downtown Hershey.

LEAF PEEPING & HIKING

If you prefer to see the leaves on two feet – hiking is a must! The Horse-Shoe Trail is one of our favorites. It runs from Valley Forge to the Appalachian Trail, and there is an access point only a mile from the Inn. You’ll meander along Manada Creek through woods and farm fields. Though beautiful at any time of year, fall is quite extraordinary. This little hike will surely give you a boost of energy and a little exercise, but it’s not strenuous. It’s the ideal spot for beginners and hardcore hikers alike.

Another great option is Jonathan Eshelman Trail – a paved walking trail that stretches 10 miles through Hershey. Our favorite access point is Bull Frog Pond, only 4 miles from the Inn. When you’re done, the Cocoa Beanery is an excellent spot for a snack.

THE ULTIMATE OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

If you’re up for more of a challenge, take on the Appalachian Trail, an adventure-seekers destination. One of the most scenic points along the trail, Hawk Rock Overlook, is a short 30-minute drive away. While the hike to the outlook is just over a mile, it gains 700 feet in elevation. The reward is a truly spectacular view of the Susquehanna River and Pennsylvania’s Blue Mountains.
